Motivation

As a PhD student in Data Science and Digital Libraries, I study knowledge, mainly in the context of Knowledge Infrastructure (KI) and the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG). The introduction of the ORKG is similar to the advent of Wikipedia and Wikidata, facilitating collaboration such as knowledge representation, structuring, synthesis, and exchange. Yet, my main interest always lied beyond scholarly communication, in science communication (SciCom) to a broader audience. Videos and Podcasts in particularly are very interesting to me and the public in general, yet the digital infrastructure for those media is severely underdeveloped. wissenschaftspodcasts.de curated 386 science podcasts, the world lecture project 59,634 videos, the TIB-AV Portal 50,690. However, YouTube alone is home to millions of scientifically relevant media. While projects like Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikisource successfully curate textual information at scale, their notability criteria, scope, and focus are not suited to similarly structure all scientifically relevant media, resulting in structural gaps in the infrastructure. The Wikibase Ecosystem has sprouted hundreds of dedicated knowledge bases to fill these gaps, yet non-textual media (NTM) such as video and audio remain largely unaddressed.

It is my goal to fill this gap. I have dedicated my PhD thesis at the Joint Lab L3S & TIB in Hannover to this cause, as well as several project proposals and the founding of a charity to this cause. The immediate goal is to start the WissKomm Wiki. Several individuals and institutions already support this goal, supplementing the resources such as experience, time, and competence, for example Gerrit Hansen's beautiful graphic crowning this application[1]. While I could learn much on the technical side with the help from giants such as the TIB or Wikimedia and the MediaWiki Community, I still have much to learn, particularly in visualization and complexity-reduced communication. My graphics are overcrowded, my word-choice too complex, and my stories not yet relatable enough. This is why I seek to actively engage with fellow science communicators, on opportunities such as conferences, talks or slams. I hope in choosing the European Summer School on Science Communication 2025, I further close this gap in my skill set to better contribute in closing the SciCom KI gap. And maybe I can connect to a few colleagues at the ES3C and SCI-COM-E to further bring together the SciCom KI.
